Cognitive Workshop Series: Tone Analyzer, Personality Insights, Speech-to-Text and Text-To-Speech

Last Saturday, developers came together for the third chapter in the Assembly workshop series. This week, IBM, in collaboration with the Assembly, demonstrated IBM Watson’s Tone Analyzer, Personality Insights, Speech-To-Text and Text-To-Speech services and APIs.

Naiyarah kicked it off by giving the developers an overview of the different Watson API’s that are available through Bluemix, IBM’s Cloud platform, and showing them some of the Watson demos that are available online.

Aoun, a member of IBM’s Cloud Developer Experience Team, took over by demonstrating an application he built using Node-RED, a visual programming tool that runs Node.js. His app made use of Speech-To-Text, analyzed the tone of the speaker and performed Personality Insights to create a summary of the speaker. Finally, Text-To-Speech read the summary out to the user.

The developers followed along during the presentation, and the team of Cloud Developers were available to help out if they had any problems.

Finally, we wrapped up the workshop with a small demonstration I prepared, a simple web application that takes in Speech, converts it to text, and makes use of the Watson Translator service. The result of the Translator service is read out using the Text-To-Speech service.
And with that, the developers went home, the third of a series of workshops with many chapters yet to come.
