Thank you, Don, for sharing the video. It does seem that Walt had a number of similar ideas with the EPCOT concept, but there is also a number of things where we fundamentally differ. I haven’t yet properly studied his concept, but there might be around 20–30% of basic ideas that are very similar to mine.
However, there are lots of very fundamental (and less fundamental) differences too. The original EPCOT city (that was never created) was planned to have 20,000 residents. Well, sure, 20,000 residents is a city, but no mega-city. A mega-city has at least 1 million residents and with 1 million residents you will be facing challenges that you won’t have with 20,000 residents. And that’s important! I’m not interested in building villages or small cities. I want to build a working model that will demonstrate how to solve humanity’s most pressing problems.
That’s why Star City won’t be just a mega-city. It will be a hyper-city.
Star City is designed for 40 million residents and just one skyscraper unit I designed will provide housing for roughly 200,000 people!
So, the population of 10 of Walt’s originally planned EPCOTs could fit inside of ONE of Star City’s skyscrapers. This may seem like a superficial difference at first glance, but it’s not. It actually goes very deep because a LOT is connected to that.
But overall, I’m glad and grateful you pointed me to that EPCOT concept. Thank you! Even though the EPCOT city was never constructed, it’s great to know that Walt Disney had plans to build something that goes into the similar direction. There definitely is a number of similarities in regards to the basic ideas.
P.S. I’m new to this Medium site, but I’m kinda annoyed that they are making it so hard to read & reply to the comments here. What do you think?
