Love it or hate it, social media is here to stay!
Today, I would like to tell you how I got into social media. Why am I telling you my story you might ask? Well, I believe that sharing is the best way to progress in this industry — gone are the days of keeping it all to yourself. I also believe that there are hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of people that want to get into social media marketing but don’t know how. Don’t worry, We’ve all been there. Remember, Gary Vaynerchuk and Neil Patel both had to start somewhere! I hope my story can help you make the move into this world!
University Student to Social Media Strategist
My journey into the world of social media marketing began when I enrolled to study Geography at University in 2004. Reading this course helped me better understand trends, interactions and data analysis. At this point, MySpace had pretty much died and Facebook was the ‘thing to do’.
Having graduated, I went on to work in client facing sales roles for three years but wanted to make the move into marketing. To this day, I can still remember stumbling across Google Analytics. When I found it, I couldn’t believe that such a powerful tool was accessible for everyone to use.
I setup a website on Wordpress using videos from YouTube and started a blog to drive traffic to my website to practice my new found Google Analytics knowledge. Within 6 months, I managed to make the dream move to a digital marketing agency as a junior data analyst — WHOOOP! Working alongside a number of household brands to set up tracking campaigns to identify sales and marketing trends exposed me to the world of social media marketing.
Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat… Why I chose Social Media?
With a number of my clients wanting to understand why social media sites were driving crazy levels of traffic to their site, I knew that I had to start playing with social platforms a lot more to answer their questions. The more I learnt, the more I realised that social media was for me.
With the ability to apply my new found knowledge to any industry, I started to manage accounts for friends (both organically and paid) to create strategies to increase brand awareness and engagement. Today, I manage a social media team within a digital agency and also freelance on the side. My goal is make alexMEDIA my full time gig.

You are reading this because you obviously care about your future and you want to do something that makes you happy. Social Media is all around us and it doesn’t look like it will be going anywhere anytime soon. Your next step is to start practicing what you’re learning. Stop planning and start doing. The only way to work out if your idea works is to get it out there.
Start sharing your story. Share ideas. Share Thought. Please help others! You will soon start to form a social media strategy that takes you where you want to be.
If you are struggling to generate content, speak to some of your friends that are killing it (in a good way of course). Ask if you can run their social media pages. If they say no, share some of there ideas and tell them that with a few fine adjustments you can help them achieve their goals — if they actually have any!
The key to social media is to be PATIENT! It takes on average 90 days for a campaign to fully take affect. 90 days of consistency. If you post boring content every now and then, don’t expect to see top results. If content is KING, consistency is definitely QUEEN. Start with an organic strategy on one or two channels and work out what works best for you before delving into the world of paid social.
With social media changing daily, it is important that you read around the subject, watch videos and above start testing you’re findings. Master the art and you will be rewarded. Trust me, the only way to learn is to jump in and give it a go!
