Jared O’Mara’s acceptance speech!
Today, Jared O’Mara gained a seat for Labour in Sheffield Hallam. A landmark gain where Liberal Democrat and former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg lost his seat by over 2,000 votes.
Most of you won’t have heard Jared’s acceptance speech because commentators spoke over him to discuss the result.
But I want you to hear this because it needs to be heard.
“Today has not been about me, not at all. Today is about our wonderful manifesto.
Everything in that manifesto I stand by and I’m very proud to have campaigned on that platform.
I’d like to finish with a little anecdote.
Twenty years ago there was a fifteen-year-old boy with cerebal palsy who went to his careers advisor at school.
His careers advisors asked him “What would you like to be when you grow up?”
And that fifteen-year-old boy with cerebal palsy said “I’d like to be a politican.”
If you haven’t noticed already, that boy is me.
I do have cerebal palsy and I want every single disabled person out there to know, everybody who’s got learning difficulties, everyone who has mental health issues, everybody who has a physical disability like me, or has any illness…
I will be on your side.
I will be your ally and friend and champion in Westminster.
Let’s all go on this journey together guys.
Thank you very much.”
Update: the full speech has now been released. You can watch it here.
