Hi, I’m Alisha. I’m a graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School for Individualized Study and NYU’s Design for America program. My passion for user-centered design and social good grew out of working with Design for America and OpenIDEO.

I’m currently a design apprentice with New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Operations. I’m working with their design and product team. I arrived here after following up on a post on a Women In Product slack channel. The excitement I felt when I received an e-mail asking for an interview was superseded by the joy I felt when I found out I got the position.

I’m now four weeks into my apprenticeship, and I’m continuously being challenged. I’m learning about the products and services that are available to New Yorkers. I’m learning to get out of my head. This is especially true when it comes to showing my work.

I’m learning all the things I do not know. I am a constant asker of questions. Ask, make, test, iterate is generally the format of my day. Discovery is what keeps life interesting.

I am encouraged by the diversity of thought and people that I work with. The team I work with is the most diverse group I’ve worked with outside of my Design for America group. It is especially diverse compared to the tech startup environments I’ve worked in.

I come into the office excited to work on the assignments I have waiting for me. It’s an awesome thing to have work that you are passionate about and people you enjoy working with.

I came into this apprenticeship with the idea of making this field my career and I still do.
