This is a nice way to look at it.
There is either an endless stream of never ending “short-terms” or the one “long-term” that makes all the difference.
But then again, the “long-term” is also just accomplished step by step.
One way to get through the pain is maybe to use the same approach that brings you short relief and flip it around. But instead of giving you the relief, you say “not today, but tomorrow”
When tomorrow comes, you again say, “ah not today, tomorrow”
This is what you call pushing through the short term by postponing the relief the same way you kept postponing to stop it.
