@Benioff Passes on Trump Tech Summit While Bezos Does a “Very Productive” 180
If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
From the Tim Cook memes to the photos of the Trump children, the “Tech Summit” has been a hot topic this week. Noticeably absent from a gathering of Silicon Valley’s Tech elite was Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Benioff has a well-documented history with Vice President-elect Mike Pence coupled with an outspoken (even for Benioff) track record of support for the Democratic party.
In today’s NYC Salesforce World Tour keynote, Benioff took a veiled shot at Trump saying: “Everyone pays taxes in life. Well, almost everyone as I know someone in NY who doesn’t”.
We will be watching as this story continues to develop or Benioff takes to Twitter to share the real reason he said no thanks to a seat the table.
A few of our favorite headlines from Benioff 2016
Bezos (Amazon, WashPo, Business Insider……) on the other hand was front and center at the Trump table.
“Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com. Super excited about the possibilities this could be the innovation administration,” Bezos said, as Trump went around the table asking the tech leaders to briefly introduce themselves. I found today’s meeting with the president-elect, his transition team, and tech leaders to be very productive. I shared the view that the administration should make innovation one of its key pillars, which would create a huge number of jobs across the whole country, in all sectors, not just tech — agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing — everywhere.”
Kim also points to Amazon’s shift in lobbying spend: “The clearest sign can be found in its lobbying expenditures. In 2015, Amazon dramatically increased its spending on lobbying to $9.07 million, a whopping 91% jump from the year before”.
In talking to several members of the AllSalesforce community, people were generally happy with Benioff’s absence from what could appear as a publicity stunt.
