Soldiers on the streets of Brussels during the city’s lockdown

Brussels on edge as lockdown continues

Belgian capital crackdown sees people forced to stay home

Citizens of the Belgian capital are still under lockdown as authorities sweep the city after the Paris terror attacks a fortnight ago.

Schools and universities have been closed since Monday, with public transport in the city also forced to stop operating.

One of the masterminds of the attacks, Salah Abdelslam, was believed to have traveled to Brussels following the events in Paris. Belgian authorities began raids across the country last Sunday, with 21 people currently being detained since then.

“I’ve lived in India and South Africa so am pretty used to security issues. But I never expected to see the violence of war in Europe. We’re just not used to it.”
