Most Awkward Date Ever

Last Saturday, I had a 4th date with a guy that I met online. Since it was a nice day, we decided to spend time outside and enjoy the weather. We met up in the city and I decided to get an iced coffee before we started walking around.

I was waiting in line at the coffee shop when he indicated he was going to go use the bathroom. I went ahead and got my coffee while he was gone. It seemed like he was gone awhile, but he returned just as I finished adding sugar to my coffee.

We stepped outside and walked about 2–3 blocks, where we finally found an empty bench. It seemed like everyone was taking advantage of the beautiful day. We sat there and chatted for about 30 minutes, and then decided to wander around the city some more. We walked about a mile before we decided to head back towards our cars.

As we turned around, I noticed something! There was toilet paper hanging off the back of his pants! It must have been 4–5 squares long (10–12 inches maybe) and it looked like it was tucked into his pants. What’s worst is that it had two orangey-brown stains towards the top of the piece. Eww! And it flew up a bit when there was a little bit of wind.

As we turned around, I noticed something! There was toilet paper hanging off the back of his pants!

OMG! This was so gross and embarrassing. I began to freak out! I didn’t know what to do. I tried to keep a straight face, but I was struggling. I had to make sure I walked in front or to the side of him so I didn’t have to see the toilet paper. This was such an awkward position to be in, especially on a date!

A bunch of thoughts were going through my head:

  • “How long has that been there?”
  • “How did I not see that before?”
  • “He was in the bathroom for a while, but how do you manage that?”
  • “Could it have been on the bench and got stuck from there?”
  • “There’s so many people out today! Did everyone see him, well us, walking around like this?!?”
  • “WHAT DO I DO NOW?”

I assumed I had been walking next to him or in front of him this whole time, which is why I missed it earlier. Could that mean he’d been walking around like this for an hour now? OH MY GOD!

I couldn’t figure out how to handle this situation. Should I tell him? And how? This was so embarrassing! I figured it would be super embarrassing for him if I did say something — I mean we just started dating! And I couldn’t figure out how I would tell him even if I wanted to. I tried to think of something, but I wasn’t coming up with much.

I’ll share how I handled this situation next week. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. How would you have handled this situation? Would you tell him? And could you date someone after something like this happened?
