Women Taking The Steps Towards Leadership
There is a shortage of women in leadership positions, for a variety of reasons. As modern women, we get to learn (sometimes the hard way) that career success is not necessarily about conforming to the male-dominated status quo, but about changing that status quo by an acceptance of what makes our varied perspectives unique. As a modern woman ready to take that step towards leadership, you must work to overcome the doubts that keep you from reaching your full potential.
To get ahead in your career, whether it is one you are building from the ground up by yourself as an entrepreneur or as a leader in an already established organization, these tips will help you:
Believe in yourself and what you do: There is no surefire guarantee of success, so there must be an element of blind faith in what you do. Push yourself, whether you work in a corporate setting or as an entrepreneur, and believe that you will succeed. While being realistic about what is achievable or what is not, your faith in yourself keeps you going in the face of challenges. Don’t lose your self-faith. When you believe in yourself, the people who work with you start to believe in you too.
Get out of the comfort zone: When starting a business or promoting a brand, you have to get out and talk to people. It doesn’t matter if you are shy and quiet, or you are an extrovert. There is no way around getting out meeting people, and driving the brand that you represent. Sometimes, this will not be comfortable, but taking the lead means getting out of your comfort zone. Don’t miss out on great opportunities by shying away. Rather, put yourself in a good position to have those opportunities, and most opportunities come when you go looking for them.
Bite back on that fear: A lot of women admit that one of the biggest challenges they face in the workplace is consistent fear, and this fear is mostly similar. We worry about balancing work and family, and being taken seriously. Consequently, this fear leads to a loss of confidence. We then try to compensate for this fear by over-apologizing. Don’t ever over-apologize. Rather, demand for or take the flexibility to excel in your job. And one secret; men also fight fear in the workplace, but they are more reluctant to share this tidbit. So, bite back on that fear and excel.
Demand the respect you deserve: If you want to be viewed as an equal or a leader in the workplace, you must stand your ground and demand the respect you deserve. And the easiest way to do this is to act like there’s equality in your workplace. Never let your gender be an excuse to settle or not achieve set goals. This may mean you have to work your hardest in order excel at what you do.
