Centipedes are crazy creatures with lots of legs and a vicious attitude. They don’t really have a hundred legs, but they do have a pair of legs per body segment; unlike centipedes which have two pairs of legs per body segment. They also have a modified pair of legs near their head that they use as a wicked fang-leg combo. These are referred to as toxicognaths. This word only really applies to centipedes, as far as I am aware. Spiders—who’s fangs both inject venom and hold onto prey during feeding—do not have toxicognaths. Their fangs are called pedipalps, and I love both of these words.

I chose centipedes because—not only are they insane—but I think they encapsulate Quirk Quest’s odd and almost dark nature. This week, I made their icon and uniform T’s for the theoretical staff.

I’m also learning that each week I’m having to create new rules for my shape language. Last week, I had to divide the teardrop shape in half to create a stripe for the bee using negative space. This week, I had to remove one side of the triangle in order to create antennae for the centipede. These new rules may be used repeatedly throughout the iconography over the coming weeks. I just need to be careful, too many new rules may lead me away from a uniform icon set.

Lastly, I want to drop a link to a Clint’s Reptiles video about centipedes. I love this content creator. He’s been a huge inspiration for both attitude and my love for zoology. I’ve never seen a person get so bubbly over a scientific word before I started watching his content. So if you’re interested in learning a lot about centipedes and wanna have a fun time while doing it, this is video for you:
