Remembering things was so easy when we were kids. We could recall even the whole page of information or a long poem. But now we expend some effort to remember something. The reason is that we’re constantly bombarded with information through social media and mass media. Another reason is that we don’t learn something as we did it during student times. So our brain became lazy. But the age doesn’t influence your memory. You should just train it constantly like muscles. Let’s see what can improve your memory!

Memory depends on food. It’s no secret that fastfood has a negative impact on your health including your memory.

Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of the section on nutrition and nutritional epidemiology in the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush University, in Chicago, says “The data support eating foods that are high in vitamin E and this includes healthy vegetable oil-based salad dressings, seeds and nuts, peanut butter, and whole grains”.

How does it work? Fish contains omega-3 that is important for brain functioning. If you don’t like seafood, you may eat broccoli, seaweed or walnuts. Speaking about nuts, they contain vitamin E that may reduce risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Not only food affects your memory, but what and how much you drink. According to research, people should drink about 100 oz of water per day. But it’s an average number. And it works differently from person to person. So determine how much you need to drink.

Check out online hydration calculator created by Camelbak.com. This program takes into account your age, weight, and gender; the type, intensity, and duration of activity; and even temperature.

It should be clean water, not tea or coffee.

As I said, you don’t operate your memory at full capacity. There are many apps for memory training. For example, Peak. It contains free games that challenge your memory, attention, problem solving, mental agility, language, coordination, creativity and emotion control.

Speaking about games, you may play with your dears. This game is called “Snowball”. Someone reads a sentence out loud, you repeat it. A person reads another sentence, but you repeat new and previous sentences and so on.

But you should train not only your brain but your body. Physical exercises help your brain stay sharp. It reduces the risk of disorder that leads to memory loss, for example, diabetes. In general, you may choose any kind of cardio exercises, for instance, swimming, aerobics and so on.

Exercising helps to keep your blood pumping, get in the mood and stay stress-free. If you’re very busy for the gym, for example, walk home. Walking increases oxygen and encourages the growth of new brain cells.

Another solution is laughter. Everyone knows that laughter prolongs the lives. Daniel Goleman, psychologist, describes benefits of laughter in his book Emotional Intelligence, “laughter… seems to help people think more broadly and associate more freely.”

But how to bring laughter in your life? Well, there are many ways:

  • You may watch funny videos on Youtube
  • Share your embarrassing moments. It helps us take ourselves less seriously
  • Surround yourself with happy things. Buy a funny poster and put up it under your desk, choose a wallpaper for your computer screensaver that makes you laugh and so on.
  • Change your routine. People live on autopilot without any thoughts as to what is happening. Try changing the hand you use to clean your teeth and hold a spoon when eating. It doesn’t only help to boost your memory but also can be funny!
