When we apply familiar solutions to our problems..

When the sales results of an organisation comes significantly lower than previous month, the General Manager(GM) holds a meeting with their Sales Director. GM is confused after finding that despite conducting a price promotion previous month, the sales figures have still dropped this month. He now orders the Sales Director to run even more intensive promotions for another month.

Is this going to solve their problem of low sales? According to the GM, it will.

Why would he think that way? Because it worked when they last ran their promotional campaign three months ago.

He is very familiar with this solution to the problem of low sales and even the sales team is all across on how to implement this solution.

Before we find out if this kind of solution is right for organisations, let’s read this short story.

Once there was a drunken guy. He was on his knees trying to find his house keys on the footpath near a street light. He asked a passer-by for help, who stopped and tried to help search for his keys. While searching he asked the drunk guy, “where did you drop them?” To which he replied that he dropped them at his front door.
