Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure book “Treasure Island” was first printed as a book in 1883. The early 18th century is the setting for the tale, which follows young Jim Hawkins as he embarks on a perilous treasure hunt after finding a pirate’s map.

The Captain’s Chest, in Part 1:

Jim Hawkins and his mother run the dated, worn-down Admiral Benbow Inn where the narrative opens. When a mysterious visitor named Billy Bones shows up, they are already having financial difficulties. Billy, a former pirate, is plagued by memories of his past. Jim is captivated by him as he settles up at the inn.

One day, Pew, a blind beggar, comes to the inn and asks for Billy. Billy, who is afraid, receives a black spot — a pirate’s death sentence — from Pew on a sheet of paper. Shortly after, he suffers a stroke and passes away, leaving behind a treasure map and a chest full of gold coins leading to an island where the riches are stashed away. Jim hunts with his mother.

Pirates swarm the inn in pursuit of the treasure map as word of it spreads. The inn is looted and set on fire, but Jim and his mother barely escape with their lives. Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney, two local gentlemen, share the map with Jim. They make the decision to equip the Hispaniola and embark on a search mission for the riches.
