After reading some blogs recently about why millennials aren’t right for marketing or social media jobs, I am taking on the topic on behalf of other hard-working millennials like myself. Thankfully, a lot of people would disagree with the claims that 20-somethings haven’t a clue what they’re talking about, but I’m going to make a really great case right now.
Firstly, let’s talk about what a millennial is, it’s a generation of youth that spans from birth years in the early 1980s to the early 2000s—that’s a lot of people who are now, or will be soon, a part of the corporate world. So instead of fearing it, embrace it and be excited because we’ve got so much to offer. I like to think of Gen Y as Gen Y Not?, because that’s exactly the attitude so many of us have—it can be done, and we will do it! So let’s go through some of the reasons your company should embrace us:
Y Should a Millennial Run Your Social Media?
We didn’t have to learn about social media, we wrote the book on it. We grew up with social media, from inception to adaptation into the business world, we’ve been there the whole way. In fact, it was probably a millennial who convinced your CEO to try out social media as an avenue for customer service or marketing. And really, most of the social media sites out there were created by millennials, and they are now among the most successful business people on the planet. This is a skill we’ve mastered, whether it be in personal life or business—we have a lot to teach you.
Y Should a Millennial Be Part of Your Marketing Team?
We have no fear when it comes to trying out new things, and we often will come to the table with fresh and creative ways of doing things. It’s not to say traditional marketing methods can’t or won’t work, but we’ve got a whole new perspective on things you’ve already done, and things you’ve never even considered. We don’t have years of ‘this way’ drilled into our heads, so we’ve got a totally open mind when it comes to marketing.
Y Should a Millennial Be Your Graphic Designer?
Fresh, creative and unique concepts and designs that will put you a step ahead of your competition. Like I said before, we’ve got no preconceived notions about how something has always looked, we’re here to bring fresh ideas to the table.
So come on corporate world, don’t hate us because we’re young.
