Mother Knows Best

You know the saying ‘Mother knows best’? My mum definitely was. I was about 15 years old the first time my mum came to me with the idea of being a primary school teacher. My response was, “I don’t want to go to school for 13 years of my life, then go to university for another 4 years to then go to work where I deal with other peoples snotty nosed kids and go home to deal with my own”.

But she was right. I was 23 years old when I had my daughter. Trying to work long hours at the local RSL Club was hard on my mum and stepdad as they were the ones taking care of my daughter when I was at work and then they were getting up at 5am to go to their own jobs. It also made it hard to be the mum I wanted to be as I was finishing work at 2:30am and then being tired and too exhausted to perform at 100%. I finally decided a year later that I would humour my mum and apply to university. I never actually thought that I would be accepted but here I am a 25 year old single mum attending university.

I may struggle, I may have ‘I can’t do this’ moments, I may get cranky at my daughter from lack of sleep or stressing over work that’s due but I am here to create a better future not only for myself but especially my daughter. She is what drives me to keep going and not taking the easy option to just give up.

So that is what this blog is going ot be about; parenting, studying, struggling.
