On Moms’ Equal Pay Day, It’s Time to Listen to Your Mother

Today is Moms’ Equal Pay Day. Yes, the belated Mother’s Day gift no woman wants — the day in 2016 when mothers earn what fathers earned last year. The gap between what moms earn and what dads earn may surprise you: mothers who work full-time outside of the home earn 73 percent of what fathers earn. And when compared to white, non-Hispanic men, African American mothers earn just 53 percent and Latina moms earn 47 percent. …

While some may believe that “women get it better,” the fact remains that men and women, Republicans and Democrats, disagree.

In December 2015, American Women conducted a national poll of voters and asked, “In the United States today, do men have more opportunities for achievement than women have, do women have more opportunities for achievement than men have, or do they have equal opportunities?”

It doesn’t matter if you’re a world champion soccer player, an Oscar-winning actress, a teacher, a retail salesperson, a lawyer, or a police officer. Women are paid less across occupations and industries.

Today marks the day that women have had to work to make the same amount as men did in 2015.
