The Seahawks entered the 2017 NFL draft with the 26th overall selection, but rather than drafting at that spot the team opted to deal the pick to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for picks №31, 95, and 249. The team then flipped the №31 pick to the San Francisco 49ers for picks №34 and 111. Still, Seattle wasn’t done as they dealt pick №34 to the Jacksonville Jaguars for picks №35 and 187. As a result of the moves, the Seahawks picked up 11 players in the draft.
With its first pick, 35th overall, Seattle selected defensive tackle Malik McDowell, who has the potential to take over from Pro Bowl defensive lineman Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril in the near future. In three seasons with Michigan State, McDowell recorded a combined 88 tackles, 24.5 of which were for a loss, and 7.5 quarterback sacks. He also had one interception and two forced fumbles. The Seahawks draft class also included another defensive tackle, two offensive linemen, two wide receivers, three safeties, one cornerback, and one running back.
