Amino Apps’ $19 Million Series B: Our Plan To Shape The Future of Online Communities
Today, Amino is delighted to announce our latest financing round of $19.2 million. Led by GV (formerly Google Ventures), the round includes existing investors Venrock, Union Square Ventures, and Box Group, along with new investors Time Warner Investments and Goodwater Capital. This investment reinforces our commitment to creating the best community experience for every passion, and in turn, every person in the world.
Amino was founded because we believed that interest-based communities were underdeveloped and outdated, particularly when it came to mobile. By combining mobile communication features like real-time chat and messaging with a deep, topical content experience, we’ve set out to reinvent what a community platform looks like today.
Since launching our self-serve community-creation platform in July, Amino users have created over 250,000 communities for topics ranging from their favorite K-Pop band (150,000+ members) to Veganism (85,000+ members) and LGBT+ (110,000+ members). This is a big leap from just a few months ago when Amino hosted only 90 communities. Since July, we’ve converted more than 150 of the most promising new communities into standalone mobile apps, bringing the total number of Amino apps to over 250. We intend to continue our approach of making top communities distributable and discoverable on their own within app stores.
Empowering people to build, launch, and manage their own mobile communities has allowed Amino to grow faster than we imagined: our apps have already been downloaded over 13 million times. In a testament to the power of passion, Amino users spend over 60 minutes on the platform each day — more than even the largest social networks. We’ve learned that the concept of exploring your passions on a deep level is universal, so we’ve worked to expand internationally. Amino is now available in five languages with many more on the way.
