oil and basketball
Houston is a city that loves and feeds off a good comeback.
From Rockets being down 0- 2 twenty-one years ago in the Western Conference Final of 1994 to the days of desolate streets and no jobs after the oil collapse in the early 1980's.
Been there, dominated that.
The Rockets went on to win the NBA Championship in ’94 after being getting in a deep hole to Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns.
AND
Houston businesses have added 667,800 new jobs since 2005. H-Town, as most natives call it, has been recognized as the fastest growing city in the United States by Forbes.
Sure, H-town is influenced by more than just oil, but talk to any Houstonian, and they will tell you immediately what creates high-paying jobs in this town.
The Rockets are currently down 0–2 again, in the Western Conference finals, this time to Steph Curry and the Warriors. Oil prices are down almost 100% in the past year and there are over 100,000 jobs being lost due to oil.
A comeback this time around, in oil and basketball, will cement a spot for Houston in the unofficial 21st Century Hall of Fame.
Home of the Rockets and the Energy Capital of the World are the first two “facts” about Houston I tell people when traveling and they ask where I’m from.
And although, I did not live in Houston in ’94 and wasn’t even alive during the ‘80s oil collapse these two historical comebacks have continued to define “my city” for the past 20 plus years.
Clutch City lets do this.
About the writer:
If you think I should write longer pieces, let me know. If you think I should improve my grammar, fuck off.
Houston’s adopted mut from the age of 8, I, Amir Eskafyan, was born to Persian and Mexican parents a block away from Wrigley Field. Nearing my 25th bday and going to my 28th country in June. Accidentally cofounded 3 y.o. energy tech startup @torchenergy and am a rookie writer. Energy, education and marijuana prohibition are the topics I most frequently converse about, investing in 2 of 3 so far, not in marijuana…yet. If you are working on something cool that is improving the current state of either 3, let’s grab coffee. I’ll also play basketball, do yoga, speak at your 500+ person event, or give you suggestions on somewhere cool to travel for cheap if you buy me coffee. No skcubrats, or Starbucks as most humans call it.
