UN Secretary-General: UN supports Kuwait’s mediation in Gulf crisis

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres speaking at the press conference in Kuwait

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the United Nations reiterates its support for Kuwait’s mediation to resolve the current Gulf crisis between Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt.

“The position of the UN is very simple: we are here to support the Kuwaiti mediation,” said Guterres with reference to the recent Gulf crisis, following his meeting with the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.

“Kuwait has no agenda [in the conflict]. The agenda of Kuwait is peace and understanding.”

Kuwait, one of the major states contributing to the UN’s humanitarian efforts, was also described as an “extremely reliable partner for peace”.

Guterres also lauded Kuwait for its humanitarian efforts throughout the region, especially with respect to the Syrian crisis, adding that Kuwait hosted a number of conferences with the participation of many countries and several parties from the world community in order to raise funds needed for relief efforts for the Syrian people.

Former UN secretary general, chief Ban Ki-moon, had named the Amir of Kuwait Humanitarian Leader for the efforts led by his country in the region.

Full transcript of UN Secretary-General’s’ speech on visit to Kuwait

“This is a visit to pay tribute and to express gratitude, for it has not only been the Kuwait leadership in humanitarian action. When I was High Commission for Refugees, I remember Kuwait as presiding over the safe conferences to mobilize the international community to support the Syrian people suffering so much with the war that has been going on and on.

My predecessor Ban Ki-Moon has nominated his Highness as a humanitarian leader globally. But it’s not only the humanitarian leadership of Kuwait. It is the wisdom, the dialogue, the promotion of understanding that Kuwait has been showing in relation to all conflicts in the region.

Kuwait has no agenda. The agenda of Kuwait is peace and understanding.

In relation to the recent crisis that occurred in the Gulf, the position of the UN is very simple: We are here to support the Kuwaiti mediation.

This was an occasion for me to express our deep appreciation for how much we want to strengthen the cooperation and the dialogue between Kuwait and the United Nations, as we believe that Kuwait is an extremely reliable key in our common commitment to peace and security around the world.”
