The need for Well-rounded Physicians

For more than two decades, Amish Purohit has contributed significantly to the healthcare field as an executive physician, in charge of ensuring that medical care facilities and systems run smoothly and are up to speed with changing technology. Healthcare leaders have to be innovative and dynamic when it comes to dealing with the changes brought to healthcare systems by technology. One of the changes that has pervaded the medical profession is how technology has changed the way doctors are doing business. These days, it is strange to see a doctor’s office that still uses paper as its main source of storage, documentation and communication rather than some form of technological system optimised to improve the way the documents are being handled. The modern physician has to have a good grasp of both medical and business knowledge to succeed. This is just one of the many examples that can be given to show that well-rounded physicians are in demand today.

In addition to being equipped to handle business and technology, physicians need to be able to understand how behaviour, perception, culture, poverty and other concepts from psychology and sociology impact the health of their patients. Medicine, in addition to knowledge about pathology and procedures, also requires an understanding of people and it is through these topics prospective physicians can learn more about people. These days stand-alone medical knowledge is not acceptable for a physician. Succeeding in the current times requires a multi-talented medical professional. The onus is on the present trainees to take the necessary steps, whether through education or seeking appropriate experience, to complement the rapidly increasing need for a well-rounded physician.

Purohit received an education in Public Administration, Health Administration and the Doctor of Medicine degree. He has also been, and still is a member of many professional societies: the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He is also loves the NFL and a former member of the Air Force. With all these experiences, attributes and activities, Purohit serves as an example for what the future well rounded physician should look like.
