Lots of really good points. The glaring exception was your point about economics. You say that the planet does not obey the rules of economics… but then later on you say that the Earth’s ecosystems build strength and resilience from diversity.
By dividing the whole circulation into a greater number of parts, the failure of any one company, an accident which, in the course of things, must sometimes happen, becomes of less consequence to the public. This free competition, too, obliges all bankers to be more liberal in their dealings with their customers, lest their rivals should carry them away. In general, if any branch of trade, or any division of labour, be advantageous to the public, the freer and more general the competition, it will always be the more so. — Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations

Among men, on the contrary, the most dissimilar geniuses are of use to one another; the different produces of their respective talents, by the general disposition to truck, barter, and exchange, being brought, as it were, into a common stock, where every man may purchase whatever part of the produce of other men’s talents he has occasion for. — Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations

It is of importance that the landlord should be encouraged to cultivate a part of his own land. His capital is generally greater than that of the tenant, and with less skill he can frequently raise a greater produce. The landlord can afford to try experiments, and is generally disposed to do so. His unsuccessful experiments occasion only a moderate loss to himself. His successful ones contribute to the improvement and better cultivation of the whole country. — Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations

When a great company, or even a great merchant, has twenty or thirty ships at sea, they may, as it were, insure one another. The premium saved upon them all, may more than compensate such losses as they are likely to meet with in the common course of chances. — Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations
Doesn’t sexual reproduction (genetic diversity) obey an economic rule (hedging bets)?
Don’t plants and fungus obey an economic rule (benefit maximization)?
Here’s a video of a coywolf deciding between carrying a goose egg and a roadkill. Isn’t she obeying an economic rule (benefit maximization)?
Here’s several videos of animals carrying things. In economic terms… they are all allocating resources. Did you know that the “resourcefulness” of body types is the best explanation for the evolution of intelligence?
The plight of our planet isn’t the result of economic rules being followed… it’s the result of economic rules being broken. What’s the demand for conservation? We don’t know. Not knowing the demand for conservation isn’t an economic rule being followed… it’s an economic rule being broken. The rule is broken because we don’t have a market in the public sector. If we created a market in the public sector by allowing people to choose where their taxes go (pragmatarianism)… then we’d know the demand for conservation.
What can I guess about the demand for conservation? I can guess, with a high degree of certainty, that it will be diverse. Demand is naturally diverse because people are naturally diverse. Diversity is the best way to protect biodiversity.
Our economy is based on a division of labor… but sometimes it seems to go “boink”. By that I mean it’s pretty understandable that you aren’t so familiar with economics… but it does seem to have unfortunate consequences. However, the problem isn’t with the division of labor… the problem is a lack of communication between the divisions of labor. And by communication I mean ‘value signals’.
