Why is the term ‘populist’ used for non-liberals?

We didn’t mean to set that up as a duality in the letter but can see how that impression might have emerged. It is certainly a central question to this entire discussion — one that my colleague Hans Kundnani addresses in his latest piece for Out of Order. The whole thing is worth a read, but here is a choice quote:

“It seems to me that we should reject the binary logic of the populists — not least because the nation state remains the locus of democracy — and insist on a more nuanced discussion in which it is possible to accept that there are problems with what Dani Rodrik calls “hyper-globalization” without rejecting globalization altogether.”
