I’ve got something a little different for you, today.

Having the right mindset in business is vital, and this is something that has been known for centuries as the following will highlight.

I remember once watching a television show where the presenter, Giles Brandreth, was talking to a Christian historian.

The man was also an active man-of-the-cloth, working as a Priest or a Vicar.

They were discussing the Sin Of Sloth.

What I found interesting is that this historian said that originally, the Sin Of Sloth was not about being ‘lazy’ as it is thought of, today.

No…

The Sin Of Sloth was about NOT allowing yourself to wallow in long periods of self-pity and self-imposed bouts of sadness.

You see, if you allow yourself to get bogged-down in sad and miserable thoughts, you will become low, sluggish, and even depressed.

When people have depression, they have no excitement and enthusiasm for anything.

They struggle to get out of bed and do everyday things.

They struggle to find enjoyment in the hobbies they once loved.

Depressed people, to those who know nothing about the condition, can appear to be… yes, you guessed it…

LAZY!

To the uninitiated, depressed people can APPEAR to be lazy and apathetic.

The fact it is… they are not lazy, they are depressed.

They are two completely different things.

This Christian historian went on to say that we humans have two sides to our minds.

The Observer (the conscious part), and the Driver (the subconscious part).

The Observer has a vitally important job, and that is…

To see what is going on inside of ourselves and to choose what information is regularly passed onto the Driver.

The Driver takes in the information and acts on it.

He also went on to say that the reason religions have ceremonies, practice gratitude, praise, dance, sing, and party, is to keep passing moments of joy and positivity into the Driver side of our being.

The Driver side drives us, and so if it is being fed sad and negative information on a daily basis, it will absorb that information, it will feed on it and it will use it to drive our actions.

I am not going to say that this is the correct interpretation of the Sin of Sloth, this is what he said it was, but it mirrors nicely to what modern psychology tells us about how we humans work.

There is a part of us that is the Observer which sees what is happening in our bodies and minds, it can make decisions on what we focus our attention on.

The Observer side is the Gatekeeper, deciding on what it feeds the Driver.

Wallowing in self-pity and negative thoughts and situations brings people down. It doesn’t help anyone in the long term.

Yes, as a human, you will feel sad and unhappy from time to time.

When someone dies, or a relationship ends suddenly, there will be a period of profound sadness and grief.

It’s only natural.

The AWARE person will know that and allow it to happen, but they will not DWELL on it or allow themselves to WALLOW in it more than what is necessary.

I’m not saying that it isn’t hard… but awareness of it can help people to make BETTER decisions.

So…

The Sin Of Sloth…

Putting aside any biological or organic causes for depression and mental health issues (biology and illness can be a factor)…

Realise that it is YOU that chooses what YOU THINK about and FOCUS on, for the most part.

Because if you don’t, feeding your Driver negative and depressing information on a regular basis, will HAVE a negative effect on YOU and YOUR life… and nobody wants that!

What do you say?

Until next time.

Have a great day.
