Korge calls out opponent Flores to return FPL contributions in wake of Turkey Point scandal
Senator Anitere Flores,
Thank you for finally responding to your constituents’ concerns about pollution from Florida Power & Light’s nuclear plant at Turkey Point. Unfortunately, it’s far too little, far too late.
Many of your constituents have been sounding the alarm about industrial wastewater from Turkey Point leaking into Biscayne Bay for years. But it was only last month that you took even the slightest action, sending a letter to Senate President Andy Gardiner requesting that he set up a special committee to investigate.
Why are you acting now, after years of silence? Here is one guess:
Since the new redistricting plan was released to include the Keys, home to many environmentally conscious voters, it is clear you’ve decided that it would be best to try and change your views.
Unfortunately, sending one letter doesn’t erase your troubling connections to Florida Power & Light. FPL employees and affiliates donated $5,800 to your campaign just last year, on top of $55,000 to a PAC supporting you and more than $3 million in recent years to the Florida Republican Party. In return, you voted to allow offshore oil drilling and raise our energy rates to pay for nuclear plants — whether or not those plants are built.
Of course, it’s an election year, and you and your fellow failed leaders in Tallahassee are grasping at any chance to show voters you care, even the tiniest bit, about the needs of Florida’s families. But while you and the Tallahassee establishment were engaging in pay-to-play politics, the contamination in Biscayne Bay got worse. The damage to our drinking water is now dangerously close to irreversible.
I am a third-generation Floridian and a father to two young children. Protecting the environment and ensuring clean drinking water for future generations isn’t just a political issue for me. It’s personal.
That is why I am asking you to return all donations given to you by FPL employees and affiliates.
Kind regards,
Andrew Korge
