My First Day on Campus
Today is my first day on campus. I got moved into my dorm and met one of my roommates within minutes of walking in the building. As I write these next few posts I’ll be doing it day by day, writing everyday after class. But first let me go back two years. Two years ago I was graduating high school (I’m 20 now), I had my college picked out and everything ready to move in when the fall semester started. Or so I thought. The school I was so excited to attend decided to add some hidden fees right before the year started. This all happened right as my family was moving from central Florida to Louisiana. My dad had taken a job at a church in Shreveport, Louisiana and now it was time for the rest of my family to move. Without going into all the details I ended up not being able to attend that school and so I ended up moving to Louisiana, something I was adamant I was never doing (Boy does God have a sense of humor). So for the next year I just worked while trying to figure out what to do for school. After that year nothing we tried had worked out so I decided I would join the Air Force, something I had always wanted to do but never thought I could. I have whats called Pectus Excavatum which is just a fancy way of saying my sternum curves inward. In severe cases it can put pressure on the lungs causing breathing problems. I had always been told this is an automatic dis-qualifier for any military service but I thought “It can’t hurt to try”. So for the next year I went through all the steps and take test after test to prove I was fine. Then the day before I was scheduled to go through the Military Enrtance and Processing Station (MEPS) I was told I wasn’t able to go because I didn’t bring one of the document I needed. At this point I was flying back and forth between Florida and Louisiana as I had started the process in Florida and the document I needed was in Shreveport with my parents. I was devastated. So I decided to just have all my information transferred to a recruiter in Shreveport to save time flying back and forth. This recruiter literally told me things that were the exact opposite of what the recruiter in Florida had told me. Short version is I wasn’t able to join. Which put me back on the search for schools. The Pastor had the church my dad went to work at recommended we look and Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky. This is when I started to see God working a lot of things out. Boyce was $20,000 cheaper than the school I was originally planning on attending right out of high school. They have a seminary track program where I can graduate with my undergraduate and masters degree in five years. So we started praying about it and researching the school and the pieces just started to fall into place. Next thing you know I was applying at Boyce and got accepted. I came to a preview day and an individual visit to Boyce and I got that in-explainable peace that this is the school that I needed to be at. So that brings us to today. Its move in day and I’m sitting here in my dorm room looking back at how I got here. In the months leading up to today its amazing to see how everything that happened helped get me here; my dads job at the church helped my parents get out of some debt they were in, if I hadn’t moved to Louisiana and stayed in Florida like I tried to do several times I never would have heard about Boyce. These and so many other things have shown me that, even though it doesn’t always seem like it, God knows exactly what He’s doing, and that His timing is truly amazing.
