Justice Clashes
Brian E. Denton

Love is, once again, a battlefield in War&Peace. If in the first chapter of this section, in nudging Pierre toward Hélène, Anna Pavlovna felt “in an excited state of a commander on the battlefield,” then in the present chapter it is the designated match-maker Lise Bolkonskaya who is compared to “an old warhorse, having heard the sound of trumpets” and “prepared for her habitual coquetish gallop.”
