This is how we created magic 💫 around SpareDesk in 4 months.
It’s going to be a story about two best friends (and after couple of months — 3 friends) who were standing on their heads to create an app that probably will change many freelance and nomadic lives. At least we believe so…
We created SpareDesk to simplify the process of booking great places to work.

But first let me explain you how we found enough motivation to keep working on SpareDesk, yes it was our side project. There are moments when you lose the track and then the whole sense of the things you create (please don’t tell me that you have never experienced that!).
So, this is llama.
We have found our ‘company hero’. We promised ourselves that we are going to buy a llama to our brand new office soon. So, we have been using llamas everywhere we could.
Llamas helped us a lot. We stayed focus on the things that matter, really. But ok, let’s be more serious now…
Market Research
Working on an startup might be a nightmare in case you have never done it before. Despite of that fact, I can firmly say that with SpareDesk we are in a better position… Exactly one year ago I launched my own productivity app called Proud (pretty successfully I’d say). Based on my mistakes and experience I knew what we should avoid and what we should not do at all. But no matter what, we make mistakes along the way. It’s just life…
We spent a lot of time analyzing the competitions, finding potential customers, reaching co-working spaces from all around the world, and contacting our future users. I been talking with many indie developers (I specialize in promotion of mobile apps) and these are three common mistakes that they make.
- Lack of market research.
- Lack of plan.
- Lack of promotion.
Even if SpareDesk was a side project for all of us, we did everything we could to do not forget about all these actions. They are crucial!
Plan
- We wanted to have at least 30 spaces on board for launch day.
- We wanted to collect over 200 e-mail subscribers.
- We wanted to reach 300 followers on Twitter.
- We wanted to launch the apps on the App Store & Google Play Store simultaneously.
Challenges
We have spent a lot of time contacting the spaces, at the beginning we could not offer anything, only a promise… and great customer service. Even with such crucial problem, we did a great job. There are many similar apps out there in the market and as we had discovered in many cases they don’t work well. We believe that customer service is a must, and as you can see we are super friendly llamas who want to do big things.
YOU WERE BORN TO CREATE
“A recent survey of business leaders at the Global Leadership Summit in London found that 34% said more than half their company’s full-time workforce would be working remotely by 2020. A full 25% said more than three-quarters would not work in a traditional office by 2020, which is not some far off, futuristic era”.
We believe that working remotely gives you a new sense of freedom and innovation. One that you simply can’t get sitting in the same office 9–5 everyday. So, what else are you going to do with your time here on earth — not make things? Not do interesting stuff? Not follow your dreams and your curiousity?
There is always the alternative after all… We want to help people as much as we can to spread our vision out to the world. We’ve just started to work on articles and courses on how to become freelancers and nomads. Results:
✔️ In case of co-working spaces on board, we have reached our goal —almost THRICE! 80+co-working spaces in Europe and in the US! Consider us your new best friends or personal assistants, who are right in your pocket and who will help you with anything you need… We will even book you a cab if you want! ;).
✔️ 207 e-mail subscribers.
✔️ top location (10+ spaces in NYC).
✔️ 267 followers on Twitter.
✔️ 400 e-mails have been sent.
✔️ We spent over 34 hours on Skype while talking about the project.
✔️ SpareDesk is now available on the App Store and Google Play, but… since 2:30 am we did not know if we will have an Android app. There was no message from Dan and we’re really worried about him. It was only silence… After couple of hours he answered back and said “Shit man I literally fell asleep at my laptop!”. He finished the app today around 5:30 am.
✔️ 122647324 llamas have been sent on Messenger & Facebook.
Summary
The final — and sometimes most difficult — art of creative trust is to put your work out there into the world once you have completed it…
It’s been busy time, pretty challenging but we did not let the difficult moments stop us. Because that moment?
