I’m guessing everyone would have a different answer. Sometimes you can feel that a project is “yours” because your advisor gave it to you. Or because you will be first author on resulting presentations & publications. Ever since finishing undergrad I have felt that a project is “mine” when I had the idea and collected some preliminary data, or conducted some preliminary analyses, before sharing it with my advisor.

I think this varies quite a bit from discipline to discipline as well.
