Is Queen’s Blade an Anime Worth Watching?

The premise seems superficial at best: a tournament in which it falls to be decided who will be the next queen to rule over the country. In this tournament everything goes, and anyone may participate (anyone who is physiologically capable of becoming a queen), to hold this tournament is the custom of the land w. An event that attracts ambitious women and girls from all across the country.

Queen’s Blade

In medias res, the anime goes straight to the action with a fight scene right at the beginning of the first episode. It also is quick to introduce quite a few characters. Our protagonist, Reina is of royal blood, and burdened by the duties of royalty, when in reality she would prefer to roam the plains as a mighty warrior. We have additional characters such as Risty, a bandit who selflessly (yeah right) saves Reina after she had embarrassed herself in a fight against Melona, a strange rabbit-girl. Melona is an interesting one. The only thing covering her breasts are two grasping hands growing out of her hair. With the help of these hands, she can shower, and does indeed shower acidic milk upon her foes. Reina experiences this first hand, when her clothing is destroyed by the fluid exposing her enormous breasts. These are just a few examples, merely to illustrate the ’depth’ of the story, that is if we can talk about such a thing in this context.

Now let us see aforesaid premise for what it is:

Tournaments are not unheard of in anime. All sorts of important things are decided by tournaments. Like who should have possession of the Holy Grail or whether steel or aluminium cans are better.

The real purpose of the tournament herein is to allow the exposure of breasts. Yes ladies and gentlemen. Have no illusions. Queen’s Blade will not intellectually challenge you, unless staring at (undeniably) well-drawn breasts and bottoms can be considered an intellectual activity.

I am not dismissing the anime. It has its merits and strong aspects, but the story and the characters seem rather shallow. But this is an ecchi title after all. It would be unreasonable to expect of it a confusing, obscure plot, or character so deep that they may come to life any moment.

Queen’s Blade has one strong aspect: women with little or almost no clothing. Let us get to the point finally. If you want to see women with large breasts, often entirely revealed, and purposefully arousing camera viewpoints, this show is for you.

Considering that the anime is based on visual combat books, it is rather unlikely that a miracle would occur, transforming it into a breathtaking fantasy, something you might expect from George R. R. Martin, and I will say ’Don’t expect it to happen.’

If you are the kind of person, who went on to acquire the DVD version of Witchblade (the anime that is), just so you may see a bit more skin, I can, without hesitation, say that you are cut for watching Queen’s Blade.

You might want to look at AniDB for subs. Note though, that as of 06/04/09, there are no releases by any of the renowned fansubs.

Do I recommend it?: If you consider yourself to be an ecchi fan, yes.
