My Favorite Meeker 2016 Slides

KPCB’s Mary Meeker just published her 2016 Internet Trends Report earlier this week, (you can watch her on RECODE delivering the slides) This report is one of the most awaited publications each year that sets the tone for the innovation economy. It’s a whooping 213 slides long! So as you can imagine, everyone has their analysis/summary of the “best slides”, see TechCrunch , The Washington Post, Forbes, etc.

Here I’ll provide my take below:

(FYI: last time I did this, circa 2011/2012 the whole “SoLoMo” concept and 3D printing were all the rage)

I. CHINA IS GROWING (Slide 25)

china

I was born in 1987…so I can’t tell you what Shanghai looked like. Though I suppose it looked like that first photo. Now look at Shanghai today. These two photos show the massive rise in China’s gross capital formation.

Me in Shanghai 2011

I went to China for the first time in 2011. I got to experience Shanghai and I can definitely tell you that it is an unreal feeling. I used to always think New York City was the ultimate city, but Shanghai felt so massive, futuristic kind of Batman like. All of this has just occurred in the past 30 years and even more rapidly just in the past 6. Crazy!

II. GEN Z COMMUNICATES WITH IMAGES (Slide 74)

millennial

I really don’t know too many Gen Z people, but seeing as I myself am a millennial I can agree with most of the attributes listed above. I do love texting and am very “now-focused”. I am starting to communicate with images, emoticons and photos. So I can see Gen Z’s appeal. 5 screens at once seems a bit much to me, but hey I guess there are a lot of devices out there.

III. VIDEO VIEWING EVOLUTION (Slide 76)

video

I guess we are now entering the era of “Real-Live” video. I didn’t fully understand this until I saw Candace Payne’s Chewbacca Mask Video on Facebook Live a few days ago… But now I get it, her video happened live in her car outside of Kohls, but you can choose when to watch it. It came from her personal account, but can be spread to the masses. I just wonder… I’m sure Netflix is thinking about this, will they be the next?

IV. SNAPCHAT LENSES & FACEBOOK FILTERS (Slide 83)

When have you scrolled through Facebook or Snapchat without seeing these types of filters or lenses? I trace it all the way back to Macbook’s iphoto booth with those crazy effects. Every time you saw one of those photos you knew it came from a Mac. Similarly on Facebook with the Human Rights Campaign profile pic to the Rainbow filter celebrating gay marriage being legalized to all of the devastating and controversial country flag filters, (France, Belgium, etc). Now I’m just discovering Snapchat and see all those creative lenses. And of course companies are taking advantage. What I read is that Snapchat just bought a company that allows for 3d selfies! I just tried it out… Maybe 3d selfies will be the next rage! Here’s my very first test: https://seene.co/s/GzmyMv/

V. VOICE (Slide 117)

I’ve never been a big fan of Siri, nor have I used it much. But maybe that’s because we were only at ~90% accuracy, as we creep closer to 99% then I can see all of this changing. I also have only seen “Alexa” in action once. It was at the #ITI100 Showcase. One exhibitor was showing me the applications of Alexa on a flying drone, (which could have been a real helicopter) and how voice control is ideal in military applications due to the rough conditions. For now, the most I interact with voice is when I call the bank and have to go through the automated options. But hey that’s working quite well (even if it is annoying).

VI. CAR INDUSTRY ACCELERATING IN THE USA (Slide 143)

cars

If we are thinking about cars today the USA isn’t doing such a bad job. We’ve got the Google self driving car and Tesla. Can’t say I’ve ridden in either of those yet but I have seen them. And of course, we’ve got Uber, which I’ve used more than I’d like to. Who is going to catch up?

Well there you have it from 213 slides these were the 6 that caught my attention. Which one’s jumped out at you?
