Just Sayin

I am a kickass poet.
With one lazy eye.
I see clearly through the other
My smile more than wry.

I hold myself accountable
For the wreckage I have wrought
I walk the earth in penance
For not doing what I ought.

I’m older now and tender
I write my stories true.
Self-Forgiven for my wrongs
But maybe not by you.

I sip my tea and watch the birds
As age loosens my skin
My life unwound of trouble
Washed mostly clean of sin.

This is just to finally say
As William Carlos wrote
So much depends on an open eye
and — My own foot off my throat.
