Poem: Tell Me A Story

Tell me a story about your hands
The last time they held something precious
Or caressed a lover’s face.
Tell me of a time they clenched tightly
in anger
in protest to an injustice,
Or the moment they softened their grip
Releasing the tension of regret
And surrendering to what is.
Tell me a story about your eyes
What they have seen
And what they wish they never did.
When was the last time their tears welled up
in grief
in utter hopelessness,
Or in pure, breathtaking delight
Indulging a little while longer in a sunset
Bearing witness to a miracle.
Tell me a story about your feet
The ones that have carried you to this place
The ones that connect you to this earth.
Can you remember the day they finally stood up
to defend you
to ground you,
Or the moment they stumbled
No longer able to bear the weight
Of all the mistakes you’ve made.
Tell me a story about your heart
All the joy and ache it holds at once
How fiercely you try to keep it from closing again.
Share with me a time you remember
betraying it
abandoning it,
Or the moment you finally listened
And followed its unwavering beat, knowing
It is the only honest gift you can ever offer another.
