Curated: YourTube

While I was curating the videos, I decided that the best way to select my videos was to stick to a certain theme or topic. This topic was information overload and filter failure. As this curated playlist is a clear example of a filter, it still shows a clear perspective on the topic. Trying to keep a neutral perspective on this topic, these videos raise to awareness the issues that are apparent in society. By filtering many videos, I am providing a subjective response on the topic. While there is a biased perspective, the content that I have curated is still closely related to the theme of information overload and filter failure. People who decide to watch this content is also subject to my curation of videos. Additionally, there may be someone else that chooses different videos based on a different thought process.

Curating is actually a difficult task. With my photography experience, I understand that with a wide selection of content, selecting the ones that best fit the theme or topic requires a lot of thought. The ability to recognize a similar theme across content is based on experience and not skills. The more familiar one becomes with the content, the better the connection becomes. For example, a photography exhibition of images and videos on the theme of environmental consciousness (taking this example from Ryerson Image Centre’s October show “The Edge of the Earth” that I went to see in person and got a tour of). The media was selected from numerous entries and a team of curators needed to pick out which photographs and videos would fit the theme better than the rest. As a result, there are many different approaches to the theme, but comes together with the context of the curator’s explanation.

However, the videos I have curated all relate back to the theme of Information Overload and Filter Failure as all the videos speak of the same topic with similar perspectives. As mentioned in a lecture by Ahmed Sagarwala, “Not all information is created equal. Quality > Quantity” (Lecture 5). I completely agree with this statement because it applies to many situations. Therefore, the videos that I have curated illustrate quality over quantity because the message that is given to the viewer is the same, yet explained in slightly different ways than the other videos. As a result, the videos that I have curated is the definition of filtering at its finest.
