Ten Surreal Places You Must Put On Your Bucket List
You can read lists online and constantly check the accounts of travel-savvy Instagramers, but there are some destinations that you just have to go to yourself to believe. Here is Anthony S Casey’s list.
- A restaurant in a cave on the Adriatic Coast
Grotta Palazzese is located in the Southern Italian city of Polignano a Mare in the region of Puglia. This enchanting getaway has witness many romantic moonlit moments dating from the 1700s, ever since the local nobility started hosting their lavish banquets in the mystical cave.
2. Tranquil trek through South American majesty
Torres del Paine National Park is the most beautiful way to explore Chile. To put a serious challenge on your bucket list, check out the W three-day hike. You won’t regret it.
3. An ancient Indian water well
How do you get your water everyday? From the sink? Buy a pack of bottles? Well, over a thousand years ago in Rajasthan, India, engineers developed a stepwell for harvesting water. Chand Baori. Built in the 9th century, it is India’s largest and deepest stepwells with 13 floors and measuring at about 64 feet. You might recognize this place if you’re a Batman fan… (see Christian Bale in the Dark Knight Rises)
4. The inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar
Head to the Tianzi Mountains in the south-central Hunan province of China to check out these breathtaking geological features. The area spans 16,550 acres with the tallest peak rises about 4,140 feet above sea level. You can get around with local rail and short hikes and book a four-day tour with amenities.
5. You can’t see the whole planet without going underneath it, too
Get your scuba gear on. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It’s the largest living structure on the planet and while it’s suffering due to climate change, perhaps seeing it with your own eyes will influence you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Plus, Australia has plenty excitements in Queensland to please the active adventurer between dives!
6. Is it just a rock?
A boulder formation in Iceland in Hvitserkur, North Iceland has attracted human speculation for thousands of years. Does it look like a dragon? A sea troll? Because it’s covered in white bird droppings, thus earning the name “white shirt” in Icelandic. Head to Iceland for beautiful views of the boulder in the Northern Icelandic waters and glimpses of the Aurora Borealis.
7. Mysterious Macchu Picchu
It shouldn’t surprise you that Macchu Picchu makes nearly every bucket list. If you haven’t been there yet — what’s stopping you? Get over to Peru to see the most jaw-dropping relic of 15th century Incan innovation.
8. Calm in Kyoto
Between peaceful walks through bamboo forests and day-long journeys into shrines such as the Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine, Kyoto’s calculated yet effortless wonder will leave a permanent impression on you (once you’re ready to leave, that is). Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine is a major spiritual center at the base of Inari mountain; it’ll take you about 2 hours to walk up if you don’t linger too long at the trails to other satellite shrines. Spend another day walking through the Arashiyama bamboo groves.
9. Drive the Silk Road
There are a few road trips you ought to take in your lifetime. Route 66, the California highway, the Australian ocean drive, or… the ancient Silk Road! It might be helpful to have a tour guide with you to navigate border crossings, but seeing the vast countryside of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Pakistan offers a hands-on insight to the perpetuation of history on local landscape and culture. Samarkand (pictured above) is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world (about 2,500 years old) and flourished as a central stop on the Silk Road.
10. Sea of Stars
In addition to being a luxurious holiday resort, Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives puts on a fabulous evening show. And, it’s organic! Head to the show to check out the marine bioluminescence of the waves which is generated by phytoplankton. No better way to end a day in paradise then with a sparkling night.
