Examination Results - A Window of Opportunity

Feeling anxious about exam results is normal. As parents, it’s only natural that you hope your child’s scores are good. Sometimes this isn’t the reality. At this point it’s easy to overreact and in some cases not react at all, neither of which is healthy.Instead, take a long deep breath and understand that these marks are only a temporary setback and with the right steps you can turn things around. Convey this to your child too. Remember they are also as upset, maybe even more than you are about their poor scores even though at times they may act defiant or pretend like they don’t care.

Our emotions have a great role to play in our learning and if we want our children to do well in school we must change their mindset about failing and poor marks.

Some ways to use mindset-change to improve academic performance include:

Reviewing the answer paper

Look at it more as valuable feedback without feelings of frustration or blame, as something you can use to improve his learning outcome. Saying things like ‘I didn’t expect this out of you’ or ‘how could you have done so poorly’ only create blocks in learning and trap children in a doom web which disable them from moving on.

Refraining from comparing your child’s marks with that of another child

Each child has his/her unique strengths. Do not let that uniqueness get crushed by a temporary setback.

Helping them view these marks as opportunities

Use these grades as a tool to review their study pattern, course correct and incorporate better study habits. Strengthen students psychologically with the belief that the right kind of study habits will enhance their academic tenacity and performance.

Coming up with an effective method of learning

Research says that punishing, lecturing or keeping the child away from his favourite activities does not motivate him to do better.

Instead, devise a study plan that is tailor-made to suit your child’s needs.

The simplest way to do this is by sitting with your child and discussing questions like-

1) Were they attentive in class and regular in doing their homework?

2) Were notebooks up to date and checked?

3) Were they regular in their study or was it all last minute cramming

4) Have they understood the subject matter?

5) Do they know how to study the particular subject?

6) And the most important question: What changes are they going to make in their method of learning using these marks as an insight tool?

Do not wait to address poor performance. Work out a study plan, put the new plan into action and move forward with a positive outlook.
