“ Other societies, both now and historically, have favoured all manner of different female body shapes and sizes”
Yes, you are correct.
“ Being overweight has at various times in the past been seen as a sign of health and wealth, indicating that culture and environment play a significant role in what we deem as attractive.”
I agree to a point. In the past, however, when poverty was rife and food was scarcer (for the poor) being overweight was indeed a sign of wealth and therefore survivability, but this was in the context of and in comparison to the general population, who would have been very poor.
“ Of course, everyone has their own preferences”
Correct, and so far this isn’t illegal.. yet.
“ potential partner on the basis of a single physical characteristic”
Ah, but its not a single characteristic. Being fat, in modern society, is an indicator of all sorts of potential problems.
“In order to continue the species, we don’t need to live much past 30.”
I would agree, if we were having kids at 15. However, feminism has been telling women to put having children off later and later (women are freezing thier eggs at 35 plus now), so this of course will impact on men choosing a partner.
“ Most women know that men who buy into the idea of “high value men”, and hold sexist ideas about fat women, are to be avoided.”
But its not a sexist idea, its a preference, based on evolution and also what level of female a man is able to attract through his own physical shape, success and other factors.
“ We set our own standards for what is a “decent man”.”
And you are perfectly entitled to do so. You go for the “nice guys” and I will go for the hot, slim women and we will both be happy.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
