Apex

By now you must be well acquainted with this term as it is the first thing that everyone will encounter when they hear of our project–our name, Apex Doodles. An apex is the middle point of the inside line around a corner at which drivers aim their cars. In other words, The apex can also be described as the point of minimum radius and slowest speed achieved in a corner and a driver will typically choose their apex based on their vehicle’s corner exit abilities with higher acceleration optimally requiring a later apex.

Bottoming

This refers to what happens when a racing car’s chassis hits the track surface as it runs through a sharp compression and reaches the bottom of its suspension travel.

Sectors

For timing purposes, each racing track lap is split into three parts, each of which is roughly a third of the lap. These sections are officially known as Sector 1, Sector 2 and Sector 3. They are roughly equal in length around the lap — with a white line across the track marking them out. The main timing loops are placed here on the track — and will be the ones you see on the screen during practice or qualifying.

Formation lap

This is the lap before the start of the race is when the cars are driven round from the grid to form up on the grid again for the start of the race. A formation lap is sometimes referred to as the warm-up lap or parade lap.

G-force

A physical force that is equivalent to one unit of gravity that is multiplied during rapid changes of direction or velocity. Drivers experience severe G-forces as they corner at high speeds, accelerate and brake.

Installation lap

This is a lap done on arrival at a circuit at medium speed, testing functions such as acceleration, braking and steering before heading back to the pits without crossing the finish line.

Retirement

When a driver has to drop out of the race, either because they crashed and suffered damage that cannot be easily repaired or the car has developed some mechanical problems. The driver will have no choice but to become a spectator.

Safety Car

In motorsport, a safety car or a pace is a course vehicle that is called from the pits to run in front of the leading car in the race in the event of a problem that requires the cars to be slowed.

Tyre warmer

An electric blanket that is wrapped around the racing car’s tyres before they are fitted to the car so that they will start closer to their optimum operating temperature. The warmer will heat the tyres up to a certain temperature so as to extract peak performance out of them.

Visor strip

This is a strip of carbon fibre-reinforced Zylno that is fitted to the top edge of a driver’s helmet for added protection.
