Or, how we view religion, now-and-then
It is Saturday afternoon; I am watching a ‘rap-artist’ perform on TV, doing a typical stage bit from MadisonSquareGarden. What is somewhat unusual about the event is there is a giant [cross] on the wall directly behind him: “SIN WILL FIND YOU”(‘sin will’, across/’find you’, down) in the shape of the cross. Surely that ‘rap’ person would never call himself “A Sinner”, in any shape or form. His audience likewise is a gathering of “Sinners” who paid big bucks to experience his obtuse exhibition on stage. All because in this the 21stCentury, being publically UnGodly is the neoKool thing to do.
But no one I’ve ever met ‘feels’ this issue at all; not with today’s morality — or general lack of. People rarely ever whisper prayers in respect of their God, nor fear Him as they did in the days of Elvis Presley. They all wear The Cross out of fashion — that’s all. Even thieves, pole-dancers and Mafia Dons sport crosses on fine high quality chains. “Fear-of-the-Lord” as practiced in the 50s is now no challenge to our Hopes, Fears and Expectations of 2016. People seem to just think they are going to Heaven because it’s the right thing for their God to do. When have you not heard in the typical mafia funeral ceremony that ‘Big Tony’ is, “looking down right now and smiling”? Who cares, that he died in a hail of bullets while cutting his baby-mamma’s throat ear to ear. I do not remember the last time I overheard a serious conversation regarding where we will end-up, when we pass-on. Folks do not necessarily pray when they do ‘bad’ things any longer; but rather to get a hit record, or perhaps more often, to hit that Number — three ways!.
Oh we humans talk a good game of ‘Believing’ in “GOD”. Though it seems real life no longer matches the family/community understandings that-once-were. Strangely no one seems to realize what the concept of ‘sinning’ actually is any more. Our usual material traditions often lead directly to common everyday sins. Causing us to lie to ourselves in stark contradiction to our JudeaoChristian background.
Our feeble games and actions all add up to stuff none of us would accept were we a God ourselves. We oftentimes imagine our God as if He were just some gift waiting in the wings. We totally put-aside the story that God sees and hears everything we do in the moment — even across the whole wide planet! Remember all those priests — and yes nuns who prey upon their innocent ‘wards’ in the still of night, in their private and personal ‘religious’ strongholds. No one knew at all during all those years, those decades even generations and centuries.
But [since] we are all taught that “God sees everything, all the time, everywhere”, why would anyone who believes in God — especially priest-level religious icons not understand this? If God sees everything, all the time, everywhere; God is watching every second of the time that priests and nuns move from their daytime ministrations of God-Fare to dinner to preparing for bed — to slipping over to the children’s area and in bed with them. Do priests and nuns ‘really’ Not understand or Suspend their “beliefs” while they are enjoying sexual practices with children night after night, decade upon decade — while their God hears and sees [Everything]?
Once upon a time such a realization would have struck fear and caution deep into our souls. Not any longer. No one remembers nor cares about the purity of those Good Old Time Religions — though upon being questioned we still do state we are Believers. Oh well.
