I follow a couple of FB teachers pages and they frustrate the $#!% out of me. I feel like they are spaces I should be involved in because they connect my colleagues geographically, but the discussions that occur there are pretty awful. I can confirm that the average teacher is doing some very average work.
I’ve posted some provocations and blog posts from time to time and… *crickets*. Posts about Class Dojo or the benefits of “pen licences” light the comments section like a Christmas tree. I’m very much an outlier. I’ve left and come back a few times out of sheer frustration and constantly question whether I should continue to invest time in spaces like these at all?
Is our energy better spent elsewhere or should we be unpopular voices pushing back against (what I consider to be) very poor pedagogy? When we only surround ourselves with like-minded peers, are we confining ourselves to our chosen echo chambers? Or is it a form of self-care to avoid energy sapping conversations with educators who aren’t willing or able to move beyond very traditional, authoritarian style practice?
