The main benefits with this method was that we only send the changes (delta) to the remote git repository on each backup as some in-house servers were affected bandwidth constraints ( eg pacific islands etc ), and in addition by not zipping the file we are able to use UI of eg Bitbucket or Github to visually inspect the changes to the sql to easier determine which commit to restore again.
This is certainly not a solution for all, but it can get you up and running with secure automated backups in like 5 minutes for free. :)
