Slabs and columns and spatial loops (OMA)
Through experimentation l came to the conclusion of using wood for my final model. Foam core has poor qualities such as rough edges and it absorbs glue resulting is uneven ends and joints. Cardboard is simply aesthetically unpleasant. Althoguh both are easy to cut, they are weak and soft which leads to some collapsing if cut into large pieces or very thin columns. l chose wood because it is strong, can be easily and smoothly cut, is aesthetically pleasant and easy to work with in conveying ideas.
OMA created wooden models of the Jussieu Libraries. The key thing about OMA’s model was that rather than stacking one level on top of another, floor planes are manipulated to connect; thus forming a single trajectory, and implied a continuity between the ground and the roof. This denies the ground as a datum by suggesting that the ground is conceived as level capable of being pulled up to meet the roof.” Also through its scale and variety, the effect of the inhabited planes becomes almost that of a street. To showcase this technique l chose the key building and constcuted a wooden model similar to OMA’s wooden libray model. My model has three stairs that show the connectivity between the slabs and how people can move from one floor to another. The columns running from the bottom through to the top connect the levels and improve the aesthetics of the model and through the rhythmic spacing, they add balance to the model. Although, initially, l was going to use wood only, due to lack of professional cutting equipment l had to use sticky tiles to compliment the wood. This added a new colour and helped showcse the sense of connectivity as the colour is present is all the levels.
