The Perfect Operating System
I’ve been using a MacBook Pro for the last few months, thanks to my recent companies in Berlin. I thought I would never use a Mac, mainly due to my distaste of Apple, and whilst I still hold that distaste towards the iPhone, I have to give credit towards the build quality of MacBook hardware.
I can imagine I’m preaching to the choir since the preferred platform of choice for most developers is a MacBook, but really have any of you truly found every feature you love to use on a single platform?
I mean, that certainly a Mac has come the closest to what I want in an operating system; the aesthetic interface, the solid hardware, being a stable platform for the software required to make my work awesome.
But I still find myself longing for parts of some Linux distributions and to a lesser extent, even Windows (even though I dare to say it!). To this day I’ve not found an operating system thats perfect for my needs.
Little caveats that each system could lend from another, the hardware and simplicity of a Mac, the media playback and Window management from Windows, and the sheer power and flexibility of Linux.
But a Mac, despite its usefulness comes bundled with the utter shite of bloatware that I expect from Apple, I mean who the hell uses iTunes anyway?
Now before anybody mentions, Linux is probably the most versatile, most flexible and customisable platform than any other, but really who has time to set up this system? And not one binary on Linux has come close to how useful Spotlight is (and simply aesthetically pleasing) on a Mac.
However my woe’s are simply not solvable, since if I were to find “My” perfect operating system, that would almost certainly not fit for everybody, or even a moderate proportion of people. Everybodies taste differs and everybodies requirements change, this is however where Linux shows its true power, in that you can customize it to make it your own system, truly.
But hey, its just my meanderings.
