Hamilton — A Contemporary Look at a Founding Father

Passionate about arts and theater, Asha Tabla has a background as a New York-based fashion designer. Among Asha Tabla’s favorite shows are An American in Paris, Kinky Boots, and Hamilton. A major Broadway hit, the latter musical was written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and recently opened at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco.

The Hamilton production is noteworthy for using contemporary hip-hop influenced choreography as a way of delving into the life of one of America’s founding fathers. It celebrates Alexander Hamilton’s journey as an orphaned Scotsman who clawed his way up to status as a national hero. The musical styles cleverly juxtapose jazz and show tunes, with rap serving to bridge the music and dialogue in a way that engages the audience.

A key lesson of Hamilton is that there is no preordained force guiding America. Instead, many of the monuments of democracy came from deeply flawed humans that nonetheless triumphed in ways that mattered in the long run.
