OOne of the most powerful paintings I've come across, Stanczyk by Jan Matejko is a very emotionally taxing portrait. The predominantly dark colour palette sets a melancholy mood almost immediately. The painting itself symbolizes a brilliant yet sorrowful double entendre, something I probably made obvious in the title of this article.

The Famous Court Jester

The subject of this painting was a Polish jester known as Stanczyk who is believed to have lived between 1480–1560. Having performed under three kings, most notably King Sigismund I the Old during the polish renaissance. He is a cultural icon and is easily the most celebrated court jester in Polish history. Ironically, very little is known about the man. His very name is a topic of discussion. A mystical character indeed.
