When her cousin passed away, Regina was in the middle of her school day at NACA Changemaker School. She was in pain. In this moment, our world of constant disruption threatend to de-rail her education journey, as it does for millions of young people today. In this video, Regina bravely opens up about how her school provided her a space for healing, and ignited a sense of purpose by instilling in her vital community-building skills for positive change. “There is nothing cooler than being a teacher right now,” says Henry Jake Foreman, a Changemaker teacher at NACA. “This is the most important time to be an educator,” according to Jake, because right now the human race is living in an unprecedented moment for change. And change requires putting empathy to action. “If we are not talking about healing, we are not doing education any service,” he adds. Amy, a Changemaker educator from Cunnigham Elementary, passionately explains that “This [education] system does not work for everybody…I am compelled, like a moth to a flame, to work on this [systems change].” Watch more!
According to Urban Montessori teacher Tiarra Knox, being ‘courageously vulnerable’ plus sharing, equals changemaking. “In being ‘vulnerageous’, I have broken down barriers I put on myself as an adolescent,” she adds. “I have found seeds for opportunities that would not have been created otherwise.” WATCH Tiarra’s beautiful story below!
