Dear friends, acquaintances, fellow travelers in the Netherlands,
After the #Women’sMarch on January 21st, against hate, against Trump, and FOR the kind of society we long for, a bunch of us wanted to do something more. We had a #Huddle, and here it is. A Pink Hat Love Letter to the Netherlands. It will be sent to newspapers on March 6 — hopefully one will publish it. It is in English and in Dutch.
Our hope is that Holland can wake up after the elections in March with a result good for everyone who lives here. We want to speak of our great appreciation for the openness of Holland and its citizens and our desire to be part of a positive society.

The letter
We have high regard for Holland and big hopes for the Dutch elections! Let’s send a strong message via an open letter to Dutch newspapers (Telegraaf, NRC, Volkskrant, AD). The letter is called the Pink Hat Love Letter to the Netherlands.
We marched in the #Women’sMarch on January 21, 2017, against hate and for inclusion. We then held a #Huddle to decide on a follow up action. Here it is!

Beste Nederlanders,
Wij wonen allemaal in Nederland. Wij zijn normale mensen, wij zijn uw buren.
Sommigen van ons zijn buitenlanders, en sommigen zijn Nederlands. Wij geven allemaal om Nederland.
Niet zo lang geleden werd De Verenigde Staten wakker met het nieuws dat Donald J. Trump de verkiezingen gewonnen had.
Velen waren geschokt. Trumps verkiezingscampagne sprak veel Amerikanen aan die achtergebleven waren bij de moderne economie, mensen die zich een goede toekomst afgenomen voelden.
De witte middenklasse van wie hun standpunt niet begrepen of niet beantwoord werd, en die op zich neergekeken voelde door de zogenaamde elite.
Zijn zij racisten? Nee, maar wanneer ze zien dat minderheden het beter hebben dan zij, en wanneer deze minderheden een andere huidskleur of religie hebben, is het makkelijk om hun woede en angst op hen te richten.
De voorstanders van de huidige president van De VS dachten dat stemmen tégen de huidige situatie en vóór uitsluiting(De “Moslim Ban”) een betere toekomst voor hen zou betekenen.
In werkelijkheid zien ze wetten worden opgesteld waar ze niet voor gestemd hadden en dat het karakter van hun land fundamenteel verandert.
Wij vragen de mensen van Nederland om het beter te doen dan de Verenigde Staten deden in de verkiezingen van afgelopen jaar.
In Nederland zijn er vreedzame demonstraties van duizenden gewone mensen, waaronder veel vrouwen en kinderen, tegen Trump, en tegen haat hier in Nederland.
Mensen van goede wil willen ook verandering, maar niet ten koste van de sociale vooruitgang en het hebben van meer en meer stress en een grotere verdeeldheid in de maatschappij. Angst en vooroordelen doen niets dan kwaad voor ons allemaal.
Wij geloven dat Nederland andere, en betere oplossingen kan vinden, voor degenen die hier wonen, en hen die nog komen. Oplossingen die in lijn liggen met Nederlandse waarden van openheid en respect, van eerlijkheid, van “Doe normaal,” en respectvol gedrag. Wij kunnen samen leven als we elkaar kunnen accepteren.
De Nederlandse cultuur heeft normen en waarden, net als alle andere culturen. Als wij hier willen wonen, moeten we die in ons dagelijks leven respecteren.
En voor wat betreft die “ander”? Kunnen wij profiteren van wat mensen uit andere delen van de wereld ons brengen? Cultuur, werk, eten, muziek, wetenschap, godsdienstbeleving?
Wij willen elkaar de hand reiken. We willen vrede sluiten met die “ander” en ook in onze eigen gedachten.
Wij willen graag samenkomen om ons best te doen om Nederland, ons thuis, een land waar iedereen erbij hoort te maken, een land van solidariteit, van waarden, eerlijkheid voor alle mensen van goede wil.
Soms houden we van iemand die slecht is voor ons of haten we iemand die goed voor ons is.
Maar laten we niet vergeten om anderen te behandelen zoals wij zelf graag behandeld zouden willen worden.
Laten we ons richten op de dingen die Nederlanders zo trots maken om Nederlands te zijn, en wat buitenlanders zo bewonderen aan dit land.
Zeg “Nee” tegen haat en angst en zeg “Ja” tegen democratie voor iedereen. Zeg “Ja” tegen een goede overheid, een schone en veilige omgeving, een eerlijke economie, respect voor burgers, en een goede toekomst voor onze kinderen.

Dear the Netherlands,
We are all people who live in the Netherlands. We are normal people; your neighbors. Some of us are foreigners, and some of us are Dutch. We all care about the Netherlands.
The United States woke up to the election of Donald J. Trump only a few weeks ago. Many people were shocked. His campaign appealed to Americans who have been left behind by the modern economy, feel cheated out of their right to a good future, the white middle class whose views were not understood or addressed, and who feel they are looked down on by a supposed élite. Are they racist? No, but they witness minorities getting ahead of them and when the people are of a different color or religion it is easy to direct anger and fear at them.
The supporters of the current US president thought that voting anti-status quo and exclusion (the “Muslim ban”) would make the future better for them. In reality they are getting laws that they did not vote for and that is shifting the character of the country.
We ask the people of the Netherlands to do better than the USA did in the election this year.
In the Netherlands, there are peaceful demonstrations of 1000s of ordinary people, many women and children, against Trump and against hate here in the Netherlands. People of goodwill want change too, but not at the expense of going backward in social progress and having more and more stress and division in the society. Fear and prejudice will do nothing but harm to all of us.
We believe the Netherlands can find other, better solutions to the differences between those who live here and those who are coming, solutions in line with Dutch values of openness and respect, of fairness, of “doe normaal,” and respectful behavior. We can live together if we accept some things about each other. Dutch culture has norms and values, like all cultures. If we live here, we must respect them in our daily behavior. And for The Other? Can we benefit from the things other cultures can contribute? Culture, work, food, music, learning, piety?
We want to reach out to each other. We want to make peace with The Other and within our own thoughts. We would like to join together to do our part to keep the Netherlands, our home, a country of inclusion, solidarity, values, fairness for all people of goodwill.
Please join us. It may be that we like somebody who is bad for us or that we hate somebody who is good for us, but let us not forget to do unto others as we would have them do unto us.
Let us focus on the things that make the Dutch so proud to be Dutch and foreigners so admiring about this country. Say “No” to hate and division, and “Yes” to democracy that works well, a clean and safe environment, a fair economy, respect for citizens, and a good future for the children.
