Cliff’s: After the Rain
Craigflower & Raynor, Victoria West
A new painting by Neil Tran | 2014
One of the items on my checklist for 2014 is to create an original painting and submit it into a local art show.
I decided to paint a little barber shop in Victoria West. Cliff’s barber shop is situated on the corner of Craigflower and Raynor in Victoria, BC Canada. Cliff’s along with a number of other eclectic businesses represent people and stores that once thrived in vibrant neighbourhoods like this all over the country. It’s rare to see these establishments these days but when you do you I hope that you will appreciate them as much as I do.
Enjoy a snapshot of the different stages from start to finish.

This photo gives you a better perspective on the size of this painting.
Painting late into a Friday night. The final stretch. Here I am quite excited to tackle the trees on the left side and completing the final details.
I love the warmth int this stage of the painting. I’m still quite from getting it done, however much of the core elements are in place.
Sometimes I get a lot of little helpers in the studio. It can get a little messy in here but the kids love to help.
There are no secrets here. I love building up the layers of paints, and boosting up the contrast.
The biggest challenge for this painting are the cedar shingles. I really didn’t know how this would go. How do you paint wood shingles?
Tackling the building first. Here I’m just looking for something to focus on and the roof was a good start.
Step one; filling in the base. I’m not sure where this painting would go other than the fact that it will be very colourful.
