You Can Create High-#Impact #Visuals in Eight Simple Steps. Here’s How
- Find a photo
For the visuals above I used Unsplash’s landing page and I used Annie Spratt’s horse below to illustrate the process.
Here’s how to use Unsplash:
Download the photos to your computer by going to unsplash.com and clicking the Download box beside the photo you want.
2. Drag-and-drop the picture into your Medium story.
That’s it — just drag and drop:
3. Publish the story. Unlist it if you don’t want anyone to see it yet.
I explain here how to unlist: scroll down this story to the Method 2 Heading: Unlusting a Response:
Few people are watching my feed so I’m not overly concerned about that.
4- Open the published version of the Medium story on your mobile device.
5. Click on the photo, turn your phone to landscape if appropriate and screen grab using Home and the button at the top.
This stores the photo on your mobile device.
6. Edit the photo, cropping and lightening as required for the aesthetic.
To do this, go to the Photos app, select the photo you want to edit and click the three-lines-with-dots icon to the left of the trash can icon:
Cropping is usually neccessary to erase the white bands at the top or sides.
Click the Crop icon to the right of Cancel:
Move the corners to crop then press Done to save the cropped image:
7. Import the photo into the Prisma App, process it by selecting the desired filter then press the arrow to save it on your device.
8. Re-import into Medium from your mobile device then delete the Unsplash original from the Medium story.
I’ve done this with several articles already with other filters but there’s something special about the illegal-beauty filter I used here:
It makes the subjects more human, more vulnerable somehow.

Thank you for reading. Let me know in the comments if there’s anything that’s unclear. Be warned: It’s all unclear unless you’re actually following the instructions. Learning by doing.
